Earthquake Safety

Santa Cruz County is located near the San Andreas Fault, which puts our area at risk for earthquakes.

Be prepared before an earthquake strikes with some of the following tips:

  • Stock up on non-perishable food, water and emergency supplies to sustain you for at least 3 days.
  • Secure heavy furniture and major appliances to prevent tipping.
  • Maintain an out of state phone contact
  • Practice earthquake drills – duck, cover and hold
  • Have a designated meeting place with your family
During an earthquake it is important to remember the following:

  • Duck: Drop down to the floor and cover your head
  • Cover: Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture. If that is not possible, seek cover against an interior wall and cover your head
  • Hold:  Stay in place until the earthquake stops and is safe to move.
  • Stay away from windows, furniture, light fixtures or anything that may fall causing injury
  • If you are outdoors, move to a clear area away from trees, power lines, buildings, signs etc.
After an earthquake:

  • Aftershocks may occur after the initial earthquake.
  • Be aware of how and when to turn off your utilities when necessary
  • In the event of power outages, have a battery powered radio, plenty of flashlights and your cell phone fully charged.
  • Know at least two routes out of your neighborhood in the event of road blockages.
