Paper "Sky Lanterns" Illegal in California

Paper Lantern found burned in local backyard

On 6/29/23, an unknown person(s) lit and released this floating paper lantern, likely near the beach area of 12th Avenue.  It was brought in by a homeowner in that same neighborhood, as the wind blew the burning lantern right into her backyard, almost landing on her house. Once landed, as the picture shows, the paper ignited and could have potentially become a serious fire in that area.

In lieu of this incident, Central FD would like to remind residents that while these paper lanterns still sell online, they are ILLEGAL throughout the state of California (per the State Fire Marshal's office since 2012).  These lanterns can potentially pose a serious fire hazard once released, as well as releasing burnt litter and potentially toxic fuel sources (acetone, kerosene) into whatever area they happen to land in. Whether It’s the ocean, sand, a home or a forest, the damage can be catastrophic.

Fire Code regarding Paper Lanterns can be found at the State Fire Marshal's website.
